Overview

I am very excited to be teaching fifth grade this year.  We will have a lot of fun learning various concepts and will be doing some interesting projects.  Fifth grade can be a big transition for many students, but it will be a good transition of greater academic, spiritual and physical growth.  Below, I am providing a quick overview of the major subjects I will be teaching this year. Mrs. Schrage will teach Reading and Social Studies. I'm looking forward to a fantastic 2015 - 2016 school year!

RELIGION:
The following topics will be covered this year:
Unit 1: Jesus Christ Shares His Life with Us
Unit 2: Confirmation and Eucharist Complete Our Initiation
Unit 3: The Sacraments of Healing Restore Us
Unit 4: We Love and Serve as Jesus Did

READING:

Our "Journeys" reading series is a research-based, comprehensive English Language Arts program. It empowers students to achieve high expectations in all areas of the Language Arts curriculum. We wll be reading a variety of stories across many genres.

SCIENCE:

Fifth graders will become hands-on scientists this year. Areas of study include life cycle changes, solar system, photosynthesis, the human body and its systems and the chemical properties of elements. Additionally, your child will be involved in lots of hands on activities to help them love science!

MATH:
5th grade is merely a year away from the challenging curriculum of middle school, so this is the year that we will step it up to stretch the brain to come up with solutions to more complicated problems. Visit www.sadlier-oxford.com for additional math practice, math minutes and tutorials and to see an overview of mathematical concepts that will be studied this year.

ENGLISH:
Students will focus on communicating their written ideas with clarity and correctness.
Lessons focus on grammar, usage, and mechanics. Creative writing projects will also be incorporated.

SPELLING:
A list of the week's spelling words will be linked to this web page. The spelling words relate to the week's reading story.

I look forward to a fantastic year!!!
